What this record tells us
Site code: OPL00A. Evaluation and watching brief carried out in advance of the proposed conversion of part of the priory complex into a Youth Hostel, revealing foundations of a number of monastic buildings, notably in the claustral area. Building recording also undertaken. Woolhope Club summary, Archaeology, 2000, pp. 101: Works exposed a sandstone foundation and a demolition or construction dump that may relate to claustral buildings, possibly the warming room. Medieval glazed floor tiles indicated high-status buildings; later levelling for the workhouse and disturbance from the hospital were also recorded, together with standing fabric revealed by plaster removal.
Additional research and clarification, 26 September 2026 Works associated with conversion to a youth hostel exposed sandstone foundations and dumped building material. These may belong to claustral buildings, possibly the warming room. Medieval glazed floor tiles supplied evidence for well-appointed monastic interiors, while plaster removal allowed additional standing fabric to be recorded.
Later workhouse levelling and hospital alterations complicated the deposits. The suggested room identification therefore remains a possibility rather than a labelled room securely recovered in full. The finds and structures add another phase of investigation to the same precinct, not another independently founded monastery.
