What this record tells us
In Stonechester Field, Attwell uncovered masonry and heating remains interpreted as a Roman bath building. Norman Reeves had previously investigated the promising field name without obtaining a conclusive result. The later work produced structural evidence and finds associated with Roman occupation, including late Roman material.
The bath interpretation is plausible; a nearby auxiliary fort was Attwell’s further proposal, not an established discovery. The discrepancy between published grid references and the limited reporting should remain visible. This is a strong candidate for archive and finds reassessment, especially to distinguish construction phases from the dates of loose objects.
