A 25 ft trench was cut at right angles to the Roman road from Blackwardine to Stockton Cross. It exposed a metalled surface about 1 ft thick, roughly 2 ft below turf, with a carefully built gully on its eastern edge; coarse pottery of uncertain date and a whetstone were found, but no securely Roman material.
