What this record tells us
A 25 ft trench was cut at right angles to the Roman road from Blackwardine to Stockton Cross. It exposed a metalled surface about 1 ft thick, roughly 2 ft below turf, with a carefully built gully on its eastern edge; coarse pottery of uncertain date and a whetstone were found, but no securely Roman material.

A carefully constructed gully ran along its eastern side. The finds included coarse pottery of uncertain date and a whetstone.
The road-like construction is the observation; its Roman date remained unproved by the recovered finds. This restrained conclusion is more useful than allowing the traditional road name to date everything beneath it. It also explains why the investigation and nearby Stonechester excavation belong in separate entries despite their close geographic relationship.
