One ditch contained a Romano-British pottery sherd, so the features may represent Roman-period settlement or other activity, although the evidence was too slight for secure dating.

One ditch contained a Romano-British pottery sherd. These observations raise the possibility of Roman-period settlement or other activity south of the historic town.
The dating rests on slight evidence and should remain tentative. One sherd does not date every cut feature on a site, especially if it has been redeposited. Separate eastern access-road investigations were largely negative and must not be merged into this discovery as though all trenches produced the same result.
