A watching brief during underpinning at the Hop Pole Inn in late 1994 revealed deep medieval waterlogged deposits. Finds included numerous cattle horncores and abundant seeds and capsule fragments of cultivated flax.
The material suggests processing of hides or horn and flax-related activity. The exact industrial processes remain interpretations. Wet conditions preserved organic remains that would often disappear in drier deposits. The primary report is Buteux, Pearson and Ratkai 1994, HWCC internal report 290.
