What this record tells us

No medieval deposits or features were found despite the site's position within a known medieval plot near the presumed defences. A post-medieval articulated horse skeleton was recorded, while two medieval pottery sherds and a piece of medieval roof furniture came from the topsoil.

Additional research and clarification, 26 September 2026 Foundation monitoring at Fox’s Court recorded an articulated horse skeleton of post-medieval date. Two medieval pottery sherds and a piece of medieval roof furniture came from topsoil, but no medieval features were identified in the excavated area.

The skeleton and the earlier loose pottery are different kinds of evidence. The latter can have moved through gardening or dumping, while the articulated animal was a burial deposit. There is no basis here for a ritual interpretation or a medieval date for the horse. A small, clearly recorded discovery can be informative without acquiring a dramatic explanation.
