What this record tells us
A gas-pipe trench east of Bridge Street produced Roman pottery, including a Samian bowl, with leather also reported. Samian is the familiar fine red tableware of the Roman world. The find is one of the better-established Roman object records in the historic town, distinct from the much less secure mosaic stories.
The associated leather makes the report especially interesting for preservation conditions, although association in a trench is not itself proof of a sealed Roman deposit. The original note and museum accession should be used to establish the exact context and surviving material. Buteux lists it under HWCM 8398.
