What this record tells us
Border Archaeology Ltd was instructed by Oracle Environmental Experts Ltd to carry out Archaeological Observation at 16 Church Street Leominster relating to a heating oil spillage (kerosene). The works comprised observation of two hand-dug pits to determine the extent of the contamination. The two pits (Area 001 and Area 002) were excavated in the gardens to the rear of 16 Church Street Leominster. Area 001 measured c.1.80m × c.1.30m × c.1.10m and Area 002 measured c.1.50m × c.0.90m × c.1m. No archaeological horizon was encountered in either Area, with topsoil recorded overlying mixed/made-ground deposits; no natural horizon was reached. Disarticulated animal bone was recovered from both Areas but no other finds were encountered. No archaeological deposits or features were encountered during the course of the excavations. Disarticulated bone recovered from both Areas was analysed and identified as non-human; consequently, no further work is required.
