What this record tells us
As outlined in the WSI (BA 2022), it was intended that a total of 13 evaluation trenches measuring c. 1.8m × c. 30m were to be excavated, this equating to 5% of the development area; however, due to access issues, Trench 012 was not excavated, resulting in a total of 12 trenches being opened. The trenches were laid out to provide a comprehensive assessment of the Sites archaeological and palaeoenvironmental potential. Trenches were opened by machine using a wide-bladed toothless ditching bucket operating under archaeological supervision. Undifferentiated topsoil and overburden of recent origin was removed in level spits by the machine down to the first significant archaeological or geological horizon. Each trench was cleaned by hand sufficiently to allow the identification and planning of archaeological features and scanned with a metal-detector. Each trench was planned at an appropriate scale. Spot levels were taken as appropriate. The 12 trenches excavated as part of this programme of AFE all revealed a similar sequence of deposits, namely a c. 0.15m-0.25m topsoil overlying a c. 0.2m-0.4m thick subsoil; this in turn overlaid the natural clays and bedrock. Only Trench 011, situated in the SE corner of Site, contained an archaeological feature, narrow gully [011004]. Gully [011004] was cut from the natural clays and contained a single, largely sterile fill, although small quantities of charcoal were observed. Due to its dimensions and the lack of artefactual evidence, its interpretation and provenance remains unknown, however, it is not considered to be significant; as such these results have little potential to address any regional or national research aims, especially those detailed in The Archaeology of the West Midlands: A Framework for Research (Watt 2011).
