What this record tells us
In April 2003 Archenfield Archaeology conducted archaeological monitoring on a site to the rear of number 16 South Street. South Street, formerly ''In Vico versus Hereford'', is believed to have been burgaged by the Prior of Leominster as part of the creation of the town in the 12th century. The disturbance to the site was limited to the new foundations and few features were observed. The most significant of these was an unmortared stone wall of unknown date which appeared to be a property boundary running at 90° to the street. This tends to support the evidence from cartographic and documentary evidence that the site was occupied in the medieval period. Woolhope Club summary, Archaeology, 2002, pp. 390-391: Shallow groundworks exposed few features, including an unmortared stone wall of unknown date running across the plot as a possible boundary. The quantity of medieval pottery supported the site's position within the medieval town and suggested that deeper excavation would probably reveal medieval features.
Additional research and clarification, 26 September 2026 Archaeological monitoring in April 2003 behind 16 South Street recorded an unmortared stone wall, possibly a property boundary, and medieval pottery. The wall itself was undated; its alignment is consistent with the burgage plot but does not establish a medieval construction date.
